Obama signs Violence Against Women Act
On March 7th, 2013 President Barack Obama signed the Violence Against Women Act, this ended a battle fought in Congress in the last year over controversial changes. The bill was signed in Washington at the Department of Interior. This bill will not only continue to help women but also has provisions to help Native American women, the LGTB community and immigrants. The Republican party opposed this because they thought service for tribal victims, and gays and transgendered people should not be available because they thought the changes might be unconstitutional. A debate is still going on between these two parties.
This whole things mean that things are finally changing. One possible impact by this is that women while finally not be victims to violent act. But not only women; Native American, LGTB community and immigrants. Another big impact is that people who voices aren’t heard will finally have a chance to have their voices heard. A finally and biggest impact in my opinion is that the rate for violence against women and other groups will go down. This act will impact many things out there.
There are so many reasons why this matters to not only Californians but people all around the United States. This matters because it affects so many people. All women, Native Americans, LGTB communities, and immigrants should know about this. If they do not know they will be at more of a risk to suffer from violent acts because they might think people will not be there to help them. So they need to know about this because it will help them and many people around the county.
