Senate committee OKs bill curbing gun purchases

            At Washington , the Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation Thursday toughening laws against people who illegally buys guns for other as lawmakers cast the first votes in Congress to curb firearms since December’s horrific shootings at a Connecticut elementary school. The panel was also debating bills banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines, requiring background checks for nearly all gun purchases, and providing more money for schools to buy video cameras and other safety equipment. Though the committee vote was mostly party-line, other Republicans co-sponsored the measure, and others indicated that there might be more GOP support by the time the legislation reaches the full Senate, probably in April. Senator Charles Grassley, a republican, said that everyone wants to prevent more killings like the deaths of 20 first-graders and six staffers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown , Conn. However, he said gun control does not work and accused Democrats of wanting to “impose more gun restrictions on law-abiding citizens.”  

           

            Well most of the senate is choosing to ok the bill of curbing gun purchases. Then we would feel safer. However, some of the senates are saying that even if we did ok it, the Sandy Hook incident would still happen because shooter Adam Lanza used a legally owned gun he took from his mother. One of the senates even asked, "Are we really going to pass another law that will have zero effect, and then pat ourselves on the back for doing something wonderful?" Many people are hoping to ok the bill for curbing gun purchases so it would become safer. And there wouldn’t be many gun shootings in the neighborhoods or at schools.

             

            This would affect many people because it would be so much safer and the criminals won’t be able to purchase guns from people that have license to purchase guns. Also, it would probably be less deaths. However, some people that are not criminals might want to purchase guns, but why do we need guns anyway. Although guns can protect you, it can also kill you. So of course many people will be glad that they okayed the bill to curbing gun purchases.
